I made a sugar solution for the sugar crystals using 5 lbs. of sugar.
I added the first layer of tar and dirt.
I added another 5 or 6 layers of broken mirrors to the Air Person (working title). This is so much more time consuming that I expected.

Today I ordered this shadow box from Michael's and hope it works. I will have to paint it and redo backing.
I continue to cover my large substrate with torn black pieces. My artist friend Mark continues to explore his found object collages.
Made a true-sized sketch for a drawing I will complete with graphite on vellum, tar, dirt, sugar crystals, and medicinal ointment, beads, and pearls.
Visited my artist friends' new art studio and met a couple of new people. I was especially intrigued by this artist's work, which is woven hair.
Spent a couple of hours looking through the latest issues of ArtForum and Art in America. These pieces of art caught my eye. Farrah Karapetian Lifesaver, 2015 chromogenic photogram Christopher ColvilleI've wanted to make silhouette paintings for a long time. This is very inspiring. They are made with gunpowder-generated gelatin silver print on direct positive paper. Matthew BrandtI do not have a strong appreciation for photography as art, however occasionally I will see an experimental use of the medium and really latch on. Here is an example, where the artist soaked the photograph prints in the lake water that he was shooting. One of the things most people don't consider when looking at art is the effort made just in the packaging and shipping. Today I started by sizing a cardboard box. Then I experimented with striping tape. I sort of like this one, but will probably use tiny half-spheres instead. I then added beads to the wire.
Today I conducted research for the price and sizes of latex tubing for the art installation Lay Still.

His skin colors are spot on, but I'm not a fan of his brushstrokes. Some of his later compositions are good too, but in the end, I'm not a huge fan. This self portrait was painted when he was 19. It was my definitely my favorite. This is only a small portion of the painting, but I love it just like this.
I added some wire holders on the black half for the lead pieces. Also, I figured out how to hold the white half during the accumulation of sugar crystals.
First, I added more strings on the white half-sphere for the sugar crystals to grow on.
In the late 19th century, spiritualism was very popular. Molybdomancy is a technique of divination using molten metal, which I am using to symbolize man's fears of death. I've used this technique before and they are always beautiful. These pieces will be attached to the underneath side of the black half-sphere. Today I continued working on the Transition sculpture by drilling holes in the white half-sphere and wrapping string. This will give a foundation for the sugar crystals to grow on. I also decided to paint the base holder gold. Lastly, I pulled out my stash of lead and stared at it for many minutes. I find it so beautiful.
I absolutely loved this show and met one of the artists, who was so excited to share his work with me. I love this gallery! Exposed Opening Reception August 3, 2017 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm Venue Creativity Explored Location 3245 16th Street Exposed highlights the work of six artists who routinely represent the nude figure in various media. Gallery and Exhibitions Manager Amy Auerbach and Gallery Associate Stephanie Rudd say that the exhibition’s theme was particularly inspired by Antonio Benjamin, whose extensive work in the genre was recently recognized with a book, Book of Nudes, published by Books for All Press. The exhibition also includes artwork in a variety of media by Andrew Bixler, Camille Holvoet, José Nuñez, Thomas Pringle, and Kate Thompson. Love the composition and especially the vibrant yellows. I always love his work!
